Top 10 Free Browser MMORPG to Play in 2011

In the world of increasingly amazing graphics, and higher and higher minimum requirements, what are the options for people with low tech machines or people on the go to get their game on? Sure, there are loads of flash game sites out there, and if you hunt you can find some real gems, but there are still options for people craving that social MMORPG feel without the 16GB of hard drive space that come along with it.
Here we have a list of browser MMORPGs that are guaranteed to run on almost any system, and some of them are still quite artistic. Simple and fun mechanics are the hallmarks of these browser MMORPG games. You can go to their website, login, and start playing in a matter of minutes with no download at all, in the case of most of the games on the list. Some may require an updated to flash, or downloading some additional plugin, but even that is maybe around a MB or two.
10. zOMG!

zOMG! is a simple browser game brought to you by the makers of Gaia Online, another MMO, and follows in a similar anime style. It features very simple controls and fluid animations. It requires no extra download to start and even features a guest mode meaning you don’t even need to sign up to give it a shot!

9. Pet Forest

Pet Forest (Originally titled Canaan Online) is produced by PlayOMG. Pet Forest has the same anime, 2D style, but again with a twist. It has more of a cel-shaded look. When you start, you’ll notice that this game has a more in-depth tutorial than the previous two on the list. It also has a couple other interesting features. First of all, it has a pet capturing system, reminiscent of Pokeman or Digimon. Also, when you enter combat, it enters a separate area like old-school RPG games.

8. Gunshine

Gunshine is produced by Supercell. It’s a top down game, similar to the previous titles, but without the anime style. This art style is more comparable to that of Team Fortress two: a cel-shaded comic book look with enlarged bodies and smaller arms and legs. It has a modern feel, and simple class and avatar customization options. If you prefer guns and bullets over bows and arrows, this would be your first stop on the list.

7. Battlestar Galactica Online

This game comes to us from SyFy, the television channel, and is based off of the television show of the same name. I believe of all of the MMOs on this list, Battlestar Galactica Online is the most radical. Instead of being the normal MMO, it starts off as more of a space flight sim. You pick your ship, customize your avatar, and fly around blowing people up. It runs on a 3D engine, and the controls are fairly simple for a seemingly complex game. This is also the first game on the list that requires an extra download before playing, though it still runs in a browser.

6. Adventure Quest Worlds

This game is a spinoff of an earlier browser game, Adventure Quest. It has the same graphics, but much more complex gameplay than its original. It gives players moderate customization options but a lot of gameplay options. There are different classes and tons of quests. There’s also a very large player base which gives people a lot of social options as well.

5. Fusion Fall

Like Battlestar Galactica Online, this game comes to us from a television network; Cartoon Network, to be exact. If you’re expecting it to look like the cartoons they mimic, however, you’ll be in for a surprise. The art style’s biggest difference is bringing many 2D characters to a 3D world, but beyond that they also give them an anime style tweak. This game, like Battlestar Galactica Online, runs on a 3D engine. It also has an additional download before you can play it. Once you get in, you can use the game’s random name generator to create a three-part name, or enter in your own custom name. The looks of your avatar has some basic customization options similar to other titles on this list. The game has very simple controls and an intuitive interface. It’s also very kid friendly, and is a great game for both parents and kids to enjoy.

4. Free Realms

Free Realms is from Sony Online Entertainment. This is a powerhouse name in the entertainment industry as a whole, let alone the MMO community. Their foray into the browser MMO world brings us another extremely child friendly alternative to raiding and killing in most other MMO games. Like some others on the list, it requires a download prior to playing, but also like the others it offers a rich and expansive world in which kids and adults can explore. The art is very vivid and cartoony, and while the starting customization may be light, with a three part name generation system similar to that of Fusion Fall, the in-game customization is quite impressive. You have free reign to change to a multitude of classes from the get go ranging from fighter style classes to demolition derby racers. Also, if you don’t feel like making your own character, there are premade characters available to choose from.

3. A Mystical Land

This 3D game takes a step in a different direction than the previous games on the list and offers slight tweaks on traditional MMO gameplay. Each action, for example, may have an associated skill which can be used to level up your character. For example, mundane tasks like cooking or harvesting plants can produce experience. Currently the game is in open beta, and requires a download before playing. Like a few other games on the list, A Mystical Land promotes daily play by offering login incentives. For each day you log in, you get a different prize, which escalates in value depending on how many consecutive days you’ve logged in; quite a nice tactic. However, A Mystical Land limits constant play with their energy system. Whenever you do things in the game, it takes energy. Energy replenishes over time, when you level up, or if you buy certain items. It’s a nice system to keep it from being a time sink for kids.

2. Drakensang Online

Drakensang Online is a free to play 3D Diablo-style browser MMORPG developed by Bigpoint (formerly Radon Labs). Drakensang Online is an interesting alternative to Diablo with visually stunning 3D graphics, an action-packed world, and great gameplay reminscent of a few PC classics. If you enjoy games such as Diablo or Torchlight don’t hesitate to give this one a try!

1. Runescape

Runescape has been around for a while now and has built up quite a player base. In fact, on their website they boast being the world’s most popular free MMORPG. While its age does show a bit in its graphics, the game still stands with the rest of them and holds the top spot on the list. With a nice compliment of customization, regular updates, and rich gameplay, it’s easy to see why Runescape has been consistently popular for so long. The game can be played in a close view, or zoomed out to a top down perspective. There is a large player base, many different quests, tips on loading screens, varied combat and equipment, the list goes on and on. It’s a game that feels like a subscription MMO, but in compact form. Definitely not for the faint of heart, this game can be daunting to the casual player. If you’re new to MMOs, or even games in general, the complexity may throw you for a loop, and you’d be better building up to it through some of the other great games on the list. Once you get the hang of it, though, Runescape will be ready and waiting to test you on everything you’ve learned.
Play Now: Runescape
Now, I’d like to conclude saying that this is not an all inclusive list. There are plenty of other fantastic browser based MMORPG games out there, and I’m sure a lot of you have favorites that may not be on this list. Just enjoy! That’s what this is all about, after all!

Top 10 Facebook Games August 2011

The Top 10 Facebook Games for August 2011, features Zynga as the big winner, again, managing to have 6 games in the top and occupying the first 4 places, followed by Gardens of Time the biggest winner of the month with almost 2 million monthly active users growth. On the other hand, we have to major drops of around 8 million MAU, while CityVille still manages to be in 1st place, Monster Galaxy from Gaia Online has fallen into 8th place and loosing almost half is users.
The Big picture shows a generalized drop on MAU users on all games, maybe it is the holidays, maybe not… we’ll get into that next month, stay with our Top 10 List of Facebook Games for August:

1 – CityVille

 cityville banner
CityVille has been for months, the most played game on Facebook, many City Building games have come out, but none could get even closer to the success of Zynga CityVille, with almost 79 millions of monthly active players, suffered a decrease of almost 9 million users when compared to last month. What is the secret? Maybe regular updates and new features, seasonal items and quests, it still goes on as an overall success, but may be suffering from Empire & Allies huge success.

2 – Empires & Allies

 empire allies banner
Empires & Allies uses a formula that will for sure come up cloned soon, mixing City Building and management with light strategy, seems to appraise lots of Facebook players, allowing player to fight each other in a relatively friendly environment. Empires & Allies was one of the most fastest growing game ever around, also to the great marketing strategy and knowledge of its developers and the advanced established domain over Facebook games. Its growth retracted a little this month, maybe due to the fast initial growth and also the sumer season.

3 – FarmVille

 farmville banner
FarmVille is slowly loosing players, even with the efforts of Zynga to revive it, with Expansions like English CountrySide, there are too many game offers, and with such variety, that makes Facebook users want to try new things, even in the farming genre, there are so many offers and some really good with different themes and innovations… Farmville currently has  around 35 million played, less 3,5 millions than the month of July, and is predicted to continue it’s fall…

4 – Texas Holdem Poker

 zynga poker banner
Online Poker is played by millions and millions of players, and there is no prediction that this will change soon, Texas Holdem from Zynga, benefits from the Facebook environment, and the easy access of it’s users to the game platform, none the less it has fallen 1,5 million players when compared to July, standing now on the 34 millions MAU.

5 – Gardens of Time

 gardens of itme banner
Gardens of Time is the biggest winner of the month, its been growing steadily for the past times, and it is one of the most played games of Facebook, it benefits from the fact that there is little competition yet, off course it is expected the next times to see an increased number of Hidden Object games flowering on Facebook, as it is already proven that it is one genre of success among it’s users. Gardens of Time already counts on almost 16 millions MAU, more 1,8 millions than last month and with tendency to continue growing.

6 – FrontierVille

 frontiervile banner
FrontierVille has been a constant presence in the Top Facebook games for a while, first because it is from Zynga, with all the benefits that this comes with, and because it uses a very nice theme, mixing several game features, lots of updated content and sweepstakes, improved farming with exploration, etc… it is falling down as other game, with less 1,7 million MAU that the previous month to 12 million monthly active users…

7 – Café World

With all the new Café, Shop, Restaurant, Sweat, etc, etc… management games around, Café World is still the most played in the genre, for how long remains to see… loosing around 700 thousand MAU to 11 million Mau since last monthly count.

8 – Monster Galaxy

 monster galaxy banner
Monster Galaxy registered one of the fastest growths on Facebook games, last month gained over 6 millions users and this month looses  over 8 million MAU, but there is an explanation to the phenomenon, the game is focused on a very specific age range, kids to teenagers users, which are known to have a more volatile trending, they are bound to faster and even viral trends, which happened to Monster Galaxy last month, but also as intensive users they tend to finish games faster shortening its lifespan. Also this users are now in their Summer Holidays, enjoying the sun and the outdoor activities more than playing in the PC. We need to wait for September to confirm or not the current tendency.

9 – Bejeweled Blitz

 bejeweled blitz banner
Bejeweled Blitz is the most played Puzzle game from the list, this type of games doesn’t follow the normal flow of continuity of the Top Facebook games, it is played in small games of 60 seconds and can be repeated to try for a better score or just for fun, but doesn’t have the tasks and time demands of other games, that ensure players keep coming back to see how their crops are doing, also there are much more offer on this type of game inside Facebook as outside of it.

10 – Diamond Dash

 diamond dash banner
Diamond Dash is another classic puzzle game like the above, in 1 minute you have to match 3 or more pieces of the same color, the more you match the more point you gather. Quite simple, but addictive, and people keep coming back…

Top 10 bosses(from 1up)

Mike Tyson
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (NES)

If Iron Mike winked at you back in 1987, it meant that with the next punch, your world was going to end. If the former heavyweight champion winks at you now, it probably means that he wants to rip out your large intestine and wear it as a tie, or perhaps a tasteful scarf.

Stage 3
R-Type (Arcade, many consoles)

Any boss can pop up at the end of a level; this one is the level. A giant battleship that filled the entire screen back when 4-inch-tall monsters ruled the arcades, this bad boy can fry you with its thrusters, smash you into a wall, or straight shoot you down. Respect.

De Rol Le
Phantasy Star Online (DC/XB/GC)

A barrage of purple energy balls. Gut-piercing tentacles. A skin-scorching laser beam. It's no wonder you need one, two, or three other friends to help take down this unpredictable, water-dwelling worm.

Alma
Ninja Gaiden (XB)

One of the few bosses from the current generation of consoles to make the list, Alma earns her spot by separating the men from the boys in one of the hardest games ever made. Many a ninja has fallen to this femme fatale, but surviving means that you are among Ninja Gaiden's elite.

Nemesis
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (PS1/DC/GC)

"S.T.A.R.S.!" Being hunted room to room for hours by this giant freak scarred us for life (in a good way). Note: Nemesis was knocked down two spots for his appearance in Resident Evil Apocalypse.

Seven Force
Gunstar Heroes (Genesis)

Back in the day, an action game wasn't an action game unless you broke a sweat battling its bosses. Seven Force, a robot that possessed a whopping seven different forms, helped keep several couch potatoes from sporting love handles (at least for the time being).

The End
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)

The lengthy sniper showdown with the elderly End is the quintessential Metal Gear Solid experience: a lethal game of hide-and-seek where you must use sight, sound, and technology to track down the old fart...and to avoid being caught yourself.

Mother Brain
Super Metroid (Super NES)

When it comes to epic endings, you can't do much better than the climax of Super Metroid. Mother Brain's first form jogs the memory of battles past, but what unfolds after her true form rises is the perfect finale to an already sublime experience. What's truly amazing about the event is that it happens without the characters speaking a single word.

Psycho Mantis
Metal Gear Solid (PS1), MGS: The Twin Snakes (GC)

By committing a narrative faux pas and breaking the fourth wall, MGS mastermind Hideo Kojima gave us one of the most uniquely memorable boss fights ever. Psycho Mantis can read our minds (actually, our memory cards), mess with our TV sets, and anticipate our every move.

Sephiroth
Final Fantasy VII (PS1)

Is it his luxurious flowing hair? His 7-foot-long sword? The green glow of his eyes? We may never know why we love Sephiroth so much, but we do know that thanks to what he does to Aerith (see pic), he's unquestionably the most memorable villain in role-playing game history, and the EGM staff's unanimous No. 1 boss of all time.
